Kamaka-Egg shell by Michele

Eggshell by Michele Powles

Looking at the first image, where do you think the story is set?I think the story is set in a classroom of students with a Maori teacher named Mr Clark and a new girl named Tania that just came to the school and her Mum told her not to worry. Why do you think this? This picture is with a girl who just came and she is really nervous and her teacher wants her to be happy.

Looking at the title what do you think the story is about?I think that the eggshells are for the kites to catch and for other things.

What does “Morena, tamariki ma” mean?I think good morning,Kids.

Why was this person nervous? It was her first day at school and she was shy around others. Would you person be nervous if you were also in the same situation?Maybe because it depends if your friends are good to you or no one would like you.

Why couldn’t the character do their work?I think she was about to cry and her whole body was tense with the effort of making sure she didn’t.

What were the flax kites used for in the olden days?Signals for help or messages from the gods or to even to lift people, although they were bigger than his one.

What did they use the “ki” for?I think for eggs to catch it because Ki’s can be for games and other things you can do.

What do they have to do with the egg and the ki?You have to put it in a Manu Kopua and once it releases it’s bombs away and they have to catch it.

What does the terms “bragging” mean? Have you ever bragged before? If so when/why?I think Braggings means talking with excessive pride and self-satisfaction about one's achievements, possessions, or abilities and I haven’t bragged before.

What had Mr Clark said the young girl had learnt today?I think he said she understood the game perfectly.

How did the group of students work as a team in the story? They were saying that Tania had a dumb idea but she had a good plan and they had to stick to their positions and to communicate and work as a team.

Why did the characters mum “jump on her as soon as she got home”?She was glad and she said school was ok.

Think about starting your first day at school, and the teacher is speaking another language, how would you feel? Would it make the situation much scarier?
I wouldn’t understand him or her and I would feel uncomfortable and the situation wouldn’t be scary and I would be kind of shy.
